City of Plymouth Hurdlers take Gold and Silver

This Saturday Nathan Higgins and David King travelled up to Birmingham’s Alexandra Stadium to take on the best in the Midland area. After progressing through the heats of the U17 men’s 100 meter hurdles in pouring rain and a head wind , they both found themselves in the final.

David & Nathan on RostrumDavid went into the final with the fastest time ran in the Heats but Nathan had the best start only to see it lost in the second half of the race as David King powered through to take the Championship Gold Medal leaving Nathan to pick up the Silver.

David won in a time of 13.70 with Nathan in second with a time of 13.95.

Well done to both boys for representing City Of Plymouth athletics club in appalling conditions and showing that they are the “Best in the West”.

National Junior League, Report from Match 2

The battle in the sun can be an apt description of match two in the Avon Division of the national junior league. Having narrowly lost the first match to Plymouth and Cornwall County, it was Cardiff’s turn to respond and the tables were reversed but only after a gutsy performance by a young Plymouth and Cornwall side. A result that leaves both sides with the same match points and only 9 event points between them at the half way stage of the round robin 4 meeting  series with the other five teams in the competition already being declared also ran’s.

The local Plymouth and Cornwall County Team with fewer athletes than a strong Cardiff Team excelled in the middle distance events with Sam Harry of CAC being chosen as the Teams athlete of the match for competing in four events in sweltering conditions, winning and running a sub 2 minute 800m. Refusing to pull out of the 4 x 400m relay after several requests for him to do so, because of his passion to win and support the team, an inspiration that rubbed off on the whole team.

With a littering of PB’s amongst the results, not least by Bobbie-Leigh Lenehan-Hodge of Plymouth who won the female athlete of the match medal with a UK power of ten, top ten hammer throw (U17), of 44.71metres. The only female top ten power of ten result of the match and despite still being only an U17 athlete. This is where the real long term strength of the team lies as almost half the team were under 17 athletes.

After two matches the overall squad of athletes used has been 31 athletes, with 22 in match one and 21 in match two. With the next match coinciding with the South West Combined Events the squad of athletes being used will grow even more giving a taste of national competition to an age group that is often starved of meaningful competition locally, but also encouraging competition for places. It will be very interesting to see at the end of the season if there has been an increase in the number of PB’s within this age range over previous years. I am hopeful that there will be, not just as the Team Manager, but as one of those that pushed for this team to be formed.

Liam Kelland Breaks his Dad's 25 Year Club Record

Congratulations to Liam Kelland on breaking his Dad's 25 year old club records for U13 boys 150m with a time of 20.4 seconds at Exeter on 10th April.

Devon County Championships, Braunton, 8th/9th May

Congratulations to Chantelle Rowe in the U15 Girls hammer for setting a new Devon County Championship best performance throw of 38.09m, smashing the existing one by 8.03m. This is also a new club record.

Also well done to Chantelle and Bobbie-Leigh Lenehan-Hodge for helping out in the Parallel success competitions for the disabled athletes. The people that organised this part of the games passed  on a message through the field referee saying how welcoming and helpful everyone had been as they had not been made as welcome at some previous venues. This will have reflected very well on the club.

National Junior League, Report from Match 1

Team Manager, Roland Mark writes,

A superb team spirit made up for what was, a weakened team entering the National Junior Athletic League, Avon Division. In its first outing, The Plymouth and Cornwall County side consisting of U20/U17 athletes from City of Plymouth, Newquay/Par, Cornwall AC and Erme Valley athletic clubs has a strong base of multi-event athletes which allowed the Team to gain a famous victory in its first ever outing as a composite side beating more established athletic clubs such as Cardiff and Bristol & West.

In fact it was multi-eventer Hayden Brown-Williams who won the Teams athlete of the match award for a strong performance across a wide range of events (LJ 6.15m, PV 3.05m, Jav 38.18m, 110Mh 16.4sec + relay). The real praise should go to the girls side of the Team with 6 athletes (Kiani Pay, Susanne McNiff, Hayley Harvey, Jenny Baker , Bobbie-Leigh Lenehan Hodge and Lauren Anning) competing in four events on the day. Most of the team were only down to do two events but with a couple of late withdrawals and three injuries on the day (Matt Sumner –back, Tyler Johnson –hamstring and Daniel Pearce –shoulder, which required a visit to Warwick Hospital) the spirit of the team shone through with athletes asking to cover vacant events rather than being asked too. Special praise must also go to Emma Wagstaff who made the long trip to Leamington-Spa from her home on the Lizard, which meant for over a 20 hour day.

The next fixture on May 23rd will be the real test of how good a team we have, but Plymouth and Cornwall have made their mark and let everyone know the depth of athletic talent that exists in the region.

The Team are still looking for available sponsors and any individual or business wishing to promote through the Teams achievements will be more than welcome and should contact Keith Reed on 01752 307349.

Special thanks must go to DAC Coaches for providing excellent transport to the event, allowing the athletes to perform at a high standard despite the journey length.

League Standings after one match:

Plymouth and Cornwall County            436        8 points

Cardiff A.C.                                      406        7 points

Solihull and Small heath                     320        6 points

S.E.Wales                                         316        5 points

Simon AndersonArrived Sunday evening. Ran XC on the Monday, finished first - unexpected. Times on power of 10 incorrect was about 27 mins. The course suited me - flat and good grass. Often would have been snow on ground but Kamloops has had a very mild winter this year with day time temps getting up to 12/13 when we were there.

3K Thursday finish 2nd, 7 seconds behind Francis an American,  9:15.5 disappointing time but had stomach cramps Wednesday night and couldn't sleep.Qualifying 1500m Friday - easy run.

1500m final Saturday - came first 4:10.21. Felt this was a good race. with the American who won the 3K and the Canadian who had come third in the 800m. Had bad start but overtook the American with 3 laps to go and came up to the shoulder of the Canadian. Went past the Canadian with 400 to go. He started to come back at me with 200 to go then I kicked again winning by 2 seconds in the end.
