Brooks Westward League and Devon County Cross Country Champs (2nd December 2012)

The third Westward league incorporating the Devon county Cross country championships took place on Sunday 2nd of December. This year the selectors are choosing the first six from each race plus two others to represent Devon at the Southwest inter- counties and Birmingham national inter-counties.

David Weir won the U17 men’s race, Jim Blackford came sixth and Luke Honey was 7th. Together, they won the gold team medal. Both David and Jim have automatic selection to the Devon team and hopefully Luke will be selected as well. This was a great run with David still not 100% fit and Jim still suffering from a calf injury.

Tom Blackford came sixth in the U15 boys’ race and will compete for Devon and James Reader was our only U13 runner and came 15th.

There was another domineering run from the girls with Victoria Weir coming 1st and Emily Ackford 2nd in the U15 girls’ race. Together with Harriet Brocklehurst, the girls won the team gold. Both Victoria and Emily have been selected to run for Devon and so should Poppy Tank who did not compete at the Championships due to an injury.

Jess Strang came 4th in the U17 women’s race and has been selected to represent Devon.

In the men’s race’ Simon won the vet 45 category and Ashley Smith was the third U20 man and should be selected for Devon. The men’s team, aided by a debut run by John Wisely, regained third position in the Westward League.

Suzanne Richards and Paula Simson ran for the ladies team. Suzanne won the bronze medal for the v50 category at the Devon championships and Paula is still winning the V35 category of the Westward league.

Both David Weir and Victoria Weir are winning their Westward league categories of U17 men and U15 girls respectively.

Brooks Westward League November 4th Newquay.

Poppy Tank won the U15 girls race, Victoria Weir was second and Emily Ackford was third. Our girls are winning the team event. They have been joined by Harriet Brocklehurst this season who was our third counting runner at Redruth.

The men’s team slipped to 4th place after a number of Uni-students opted to run the Plymouth 10k.In contrast to Ashley Smith who came 9th in the Plymouth 10k (4th non international runner)  and then ran at the Westward league where he was our top male runner coming 25th.

Paula Simson was our only lady runner and is winning the vet 35 category after 2 races.

Our U17 men are winning the team event. Luke Honey has joined them this season and although David has been unable to train over the past couple of weeks and Jim has not been able to train properly since the summer, they performed well as a team with David 4TH, Jim 6th and Luke 7th. The juniors and U17 Men only need to run 4 races this season for the Westward league so hopefully both David’s and Jim’s injuries can improve and they can start running at their best.

The men’s vet team is 6th at the moment after only having three runners at Redruth.

Brooks Westward League October 14th at Redruth

Victoria Weir won the U15 girls race with Poppy Tank coming second.

David weir won the U17 men’s race.

Several University students ran for the City of Plymouth men’s and ladies’ teams. Our best male runners were Jack Hutchens who finished sixth (he normally runs for North Devon), Will Massey who finished fifteenth and Ashley Smith who finished 22nd. The men’s team were third overall.

Two new runners competed for Plymouth. These were James Reader U13 boy and Erin Spiller U13 girl.

Level 2 Officials Course - Letter from Keith Reed

Dear All

As we reach the end of the summer it is evident we really need to run a full range of Level 2 Officials courses in our area as there is a real need to recruit and train new some officials for all of our clubs.

The cost of the level 2 course is £30 and the stand alone module for Health and Safety is £10.

There is now the added module to the course which is a Health and Safety module. This module is also a requirement for existing officials to take ideally every three years. This means that we also offer this part of the course to existing officials who need to do it.

I would like to put on all the disciplines if possible which are Track, Field, Timekeeping, Starter/Marksman and Photofinish. The problem I have is where and when. Ideally somewhere like Plymouth would be good as it is central but I realise it still involves travel.

Could everyone please let me know if they have anyone who would like to take the course and if they would be willing to travel to Plymouth. Also what do we feel would be the best dates. If everyone could get back to me soon I can set up the course with EA who arrange the tutors.

South West Championships and Inter Counties Entry Information (29th May 2012)

To all Clubs, Coaches and Athletes in Devon

This is just to confirm the details of the EA South West Championships & Inter Counties is being held at Exeter Arena on 15th July 2012. Below are the key points to be aware of:

 1.       We have changed the format so that all athletes need to enter themselves via our online booking system.

 2.       Entry is by standard only - any athlete from the 7 south west counties of Avon, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset or Wiltshire  who has met the standard is welcome to enter. South West Athletics Academy also reserve the right to enter guests at this event.

 3.       We will also be allowing a limited number of additional entries from athletes out of the SW area in the under 20 and senior age groups only- also within the standards set.

 4.       We will also have some athletes from Ghana and Swaziland taking part as guests

 5.       We have reduced some of the standards in the senior events to ensure that  enough athletes are able to take part from the region based on 2011 rankings. We have also decided to change the number of attempts in all field events to 4 attempts for under 13-17 and 6 attempts (for the final 8) for under 20's and seniors.

 6.       The closing date for individual entries is Monday 25th June.

 7.       Counties will then be provided with a list of all those that have entered to ensure their teams are complete and select their county team from this list. Counties will be able to select one per event and select those who have not reached the standard – but only county team managers can do this.

 8.        Athletes can enter as many events as they wish (under UKA rules) provided they meet the standard.

 9.        Entry fees are per event and are £5.50 (U17 and below), £6.50 for U20 & Seniors and £8.50 for athletes from outside the SW County area.

10.    Paper copies for booking will also be available however we recommend the online booking and payment system on our website (see link) please email or call for details.

11.    All information about the event is  on our website.

Cross Country End of Season Report (April 2012)

The last Westward League of the season was at Central Park Plymouth on March 18th. It was pleasing to see a few Plymouth minors in the U11 development race (J. Johnson, I. Ibbotson and F. Williams) but overall it was a poor turnout for our home event. However, what we lacked in quantity we made up for in quality with 5 overall individual champions.

David weir U17M

James Blackford U15b

Tom Blackford U13B

Emily Ackford U15G

Simon Anderson VM45

Victoria Weir was 2nd U15 G and Adrian Millership was 3rd VM50.

This has been the best season for City of Plymouth I can remember with our athletes winning four of the eight main categories, more than any other club.

We fared less well in the team events due mainly to lack of numbers but came 2nd in the U15 girls, 3rd in the U15 boys, 3rd in the vet men and 4th in the senior men.

Overall a very successful season which I hope we can build on for next year.

The National inter-counties Cross Country Championships was held at Birmingham on March 10th-the weather was excellent and the ground was dry resulting in fast times being recorded. 10 City of Plymouth athletes represented Devon:-

Paid Coaching Opportunity at the Plymouth Life Centre (20th March 2012)

The Life Centre has an enormous amount of indoor athletics equipment that they want to make use of in order to help develop the sport and get kids and adults active. They are looking for some athletics coaches to join the coaching team to help this happen. There are 2 sessions they are particularly looking to cover with the possibility of extra sessions and coaching opportunities as they move on.

Tuesday – 4-5pm we are holding indoor athletics sessions for 5-7 year olds

Tuesday – 5-6pm we are holding indoor athletics sessions for 8-11year olds

Friday – 9-11am we are holding athleticfit sessions for 50+

Ideally they would like a coach or coaches to commit to these sessions. They are thinking one coach for the 50+ session and 2 for the kids sessions although they may need to see how numbers go to begin with. Keith has said he will help out for the first few weeks so one to start with and this may progress to 2.

All coaches get paid £12 p/hour and will be taken on as members of staff therefore undergo a CRB check also with them.

They are hoping for sessions to start next week 27th and 30th March so this is pretty urgent.

If you are interested and you are a LiRF, CiRF, Athletics Coach or a Level 2 and above coach then contact Louise Chaves, Plymouth Activities Manager on 07715 848957,  via Plymouth Life Centre, Mayflower Drive, Plymouth, PL2 3DG or email her at
