Southern Athletics League Andover 25th April 2015

City of Plymouth Athletic Club travelled to Andover for their first meeting of the Season after promotion last year to Divison 2 West with a rather small team, with athletes either unavailable injured or competing elsewhere. The ladies team was missing a number of athletes which meant the ladies would probably be called upon to compete in unfamiliar events for points. The club took the opportunity to include some of the younger athletes to make their debuts and they all performed well. The other competing teams were Andover & Overton, Oxford City  and Epsom & Ewell.

The meeting opened with the women’s hammer with sisters Liz & Chloe Edwards winning both the A & B String competitions gaining maximum points. They later joined forces for the discus with both finishing in 3rd spot. At the same time Kerry Smith-Wightman was taking top spot in the pole vault with a clearance of 1.9 m.

The men’s competition commenced with the shot and Luke Sings and training partner took 3rd and 2nd spot to add valuable points. The pair also faired well in the javelin with Connor winning the A and Luke winning the B event. The ever reliable Matt Gilbert cleared 1.78 m to take top spot in the high jump.

Lily Edmonds took 3rd spot in the A string long jump with debutant Courtney Weston U17 also taking 3rd spot in the B event. Lily moved straight from the long jump competition to race the 400 metre hurdles along with Team Manager Tamzin Gribble with both taking top spot in their races.

In the men’s 400 metre hurdles Alisdair Carpenter & Matt Bradley filled the empty spots for this event both coming through in second spot to ensure points kept coming. In the men’s hammer Luke Sings took second spot with hammer novice Conner Bolt coming 4th. Luke also won the discus competition.

Chloe Edwards & Kerry Smith-Wightman both achieved second places in the women’s shot and they also took 2nd and 3rd place finishes in the javelin. The women’s 100 metres had Courtney Weston Under 17 making her debut at senior level and she ran a creditable 13.00secs finishing 3rd in a very close race. Lily Edmonds having a very busy day also came in 3rd in the B Race. In the 400 metres Hayley Harvey and Jess Strang took top spot to keep the Club slightly in the lead with a third of the events gone. Jess Strang moved up to the 1500 metres taking 2nd position. Hayley then joined up with Courtney Weston over 200 metres with Hayley and Courtney Weston both coming 2nd.

In the men's sprints Tyler Johnson and Ross Evans took valuable points in the 100 metres then Tyler partnered his younger brother Bradley over 200 metres with Bradley running a personal best. The 400 metre pairing of Alistair Carpenter and Elliot Platt (U17) took 3rd and 2nd  with Elliot running a superb 54.00 secs in his first Senior run over the distance. The men’s distance races were covered by the ever present Simon Anderson with Chris Williams, Stephen Burns, Dean Smith, Matt Bradley and John Cooper. Over 800 metres Dean Smith & Simon Anderson both took top spot. Simon followed this up with a win in the 1500 Metres with Chris Williams 2nd. Steve Burns & John Cooper both claimed 2nd place over 5000 metres. Matt Bradley and John Cooper both won their respective 2000 Metre Steeplechase. The distance men Matt Bradley and Dean Smith showed their commitment to the team by also entering the triple jump just for points.

Not to be outdone Hayley Harvey and Tamzin Gribble entered the women’s steeplechase to keep the points moving. In the women’s high jump competition, Aimee-Leigh Clowes (U17) cleared 1.60 metres only finishing 2nd by countback and Lily Edmonds won the B String competition. Aimee also competed with Tamzin Gribble in the triple jump with a 3rd and 1st finish.

The final events of the day were the relays with the women’s team 2nd in the 4 x100 metres. The men’s teams were 3rd in the 4 x 100 metres and won the 4 x 400 mtrs 5 seconds ahead of Andover.
